Depends on the drug. Most drugs which cause ‘highs’ light up the reward pathway in the brain giving a sense of heightened well being. This is temporary. You also have various places in the brain where drugs bind to receptors which cause a similar sensation. The problem is, once these areas have been stimulated there is a tendency to keep stimulating them which ultimately means they become less sensitive. So you’ll end up needing more & more of the drug not just to get the high but to function normally! It can be a dangerous and life destroying path.
