There are lots of different ideas about how to treat resistance, some of them work and some are still being studied to see if they work. There needs to be lots of co-operation – research, development, letting people know about the problem and how they can help etc. Hopefully we’ll get to a stage soon where we can fight it much more effectively.

Antibiotic resistance is a naturally occurring phenomenon. We have resistant bacteria long before we discovered antibiotics. So we will never be able to stop it, but what we can do is to slow it down and conserve the benefit we get from our current antibiotics. We also need to look into new methods of treating infection and new target sites. My favourite idea is using viruses to kill bacteria. I think there is a lot of potential to that idea. It’s still in the research stage though.
