      Depends on the type of antibiotic. Some stop the bacterial cells from replicating (making more)- bacteriostatic. Others completely destroy the bacterial cell- bacteriocidal. Both are equally as effective in curing infection.

      In a variety of ways, most commonly they target a vital process for the cells you are trying to kill, such as DNA replication.
