Trying to find out as much as we can about how bacteria or cells become resistant and then using that info to look for alternative treatment methods or new drugs.

There are two ways we are approaching the problem.

One aspect, which I am involved in, is discovering new drugs that the bacteria aren’t resistant to.

Another approach, that is equally important, is to improve our use of antibiotics. To use them less and only when required to reduce to time it takes for resistance to develop.

My project is all about combatting drug resistance. I’ve been working with GPs to help them prescribe antibiotics more effectively and also working with the public to raise awareness. I’ve even been into primary schools teaching youngsters the importance of washing their hands! My project is at a local level but there are also many national and international projects.
