Finding out all the ways a bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics would be quite a big thing. Once we know that we have knowledge that will help people to develop new antibiotics or alternative methods to treat bacterial infections.
For me, the technology that is the most exciting is gene synthesis!
At the moment we can read DNA very well using genome sequencing, however writing genes (through synthesis) is very expensive and so cannot be used all the time. The applications of doing this are huge as we will no longer need to rely on existing DNA sequences and can (on a large scale) begin to generate new sequences from scratch!
I think it’ll be using viruses (also called phases) to kill bacteria. There are some quite exciting experiments being done in this area at the moment. This could revolutionise how we treat infections in the future.
