Some drugs can change the way you feel, if they make you feel good then you want to repeat that experience so you take the drug again and then it continues. After a while your body may build up a tolerance and so you take more and more and more often and become addicted.
The drugs you get hooked on act in your brain. They light up your reward pathway which gives a good feeling initially. Unfortunately, the more you stimulate particular receptors, the more you need to continue to stimulate them in order to just maintain the same level of function. You lose the good feeling but get a dependence. This is when drug abuse can be really detrimental to your health.
